The Best Grocery Stores in Hampton Roads

Depending on your needs, a grocery store can either make or break your shopping trip. Moving to a new place in the country usually also means that there is a brand new assortment of grocery stores. Here are some of the best ones, plus a description of each so you can decide which one is the best for you.

Farm Fresh

This place has an awesome assortment of produce that is always, well, fresh. They also have a pretty hefty arrangement of organic and gluten-free foods that range from bread to mac n’ cheese. Farm Fresh also houses one of the biggest candy sections in the area. This is your place to go if you love vegetables, fruit, chocolate, or all three.

Aldi

Aldi is a grocery chain that originated in Europe, so 25-cent-deposit carts and the lack of plastic bags are the norm in this store. However, the selection and the price of the items inside are tough to beat by their American competitors. Shop here if you are either on a budget, hate plastic bags, or have a hankering for Belgian chocolate (if you haven’t tried it, do).

Kroger

Kroger is more of a family store, but a little more poise than your local Wal-Mart. The deals are hot here, so get them while you can. This store also offers a wide range of ready-to-eat selections that are made in-store, so you can grab dinner after you are finished shopping. This is a great place for you if you are on a budget, like hot food, or are always really hungry when grocery shopping.

Harris Teeter

A lot of people on the Southside (the affectionate name for the area of Hampton Roads south of the James River) LOVE this place. The service is amazing, and the store offers a cozy atmosphere with the same selection as your average Wal-Mart. Food is a little pricey here, but it makes up for it by having the best selection of organic, gluten-free, and dairy-free foods out of all of the grocery stores in the area. Shop here if you like organic food, want to meet Southside suburbia folk, or like a small grocery store.
